Following the Lakers’ first-round playoff sweep, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith made it clear he believes the New York Knicks should be the top choice for LeBron James this offseason.
On the May 12, 2026, episode of *First Take*, Smith unveiled his list of the five best landing spots for LeBron in 2026. Topping that list was his beloved Knicks, ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and even retirement.

According to Smith, signing James makes perfect sense for New York. The Knicks wouldn’t have to surrender any assets to acquire him, and his arrival would bring immense commercial value to a franchise already worth billions.
“By the way, you are the New York Knicks. The New York Knicks brand is you. Billionaire James Dolan—whatever you say about him, he knows how to make money—LeBron James on Wall Street? If he puts on a Knicks jersey, we’re talking about an easy half-billion dollars more in his pocket,” Smith argued.
Smith added that if the Knicks fail to win a championship this year and James joins them to lead a title run, the financial windfall would be even greater.
**Could LeBron James Really Join the Knicks in Free Agency?**
James’ next move remains uncertain after the Lakers were eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Even James himself admitted he doesn’t know what the future holds.
Joining the Knicks would undoubtedly be a marquee move. As one of the NBA’s most recognizable figures, James would instantly elevate the franchise. Meanwhile, he has been with the Lakers since 2018, winning one championship there, and his son Bronny James Jr. is also on the Lakers roster. For a move to New York to happen, it would need to make sense for both sides.
