{MIDDLESEX PRODUCED AN EXCELLENT BOWLING PERFORMANCE}
In seamer-friendly conditions at Emirates Old Trafford, Middlesex dominated the opening day of their Rothesay County Championship Division Two clash against Lancashire, bowling the hosts out for 201 before reaching 38-2 in reply.
Winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Middlesex’s seamers claimed all 10 wickets, with Seb Morgan, Toby Roland-Jones, and Ryan Higgins each taking three. Lancashire opener Keaton Jennings top-scored with a gritty 67, while Australia all-rounder Chris Green contributed 35 lower down the order, but wickets fell regularly.
In response, Lancashire captain James Anderson struck twice, dismissing Sam Robson and Max Holden to leave Middlesex at 24-2. The visitors progressed to 38-2 before bad light ended play early, with 17 overs lost. Middlesex trail by 163 runs.
The day began with a wicket in the second over as makeshift opener George Balderson was trapped lbw by Higgins for eight. Jennings and Josh Bohannon then put on a 56-run stand—the highest of the innings—before Higgins struck again after lunch, having Bohannon caught behind for 20.
Just before the interval, Australia batter Marcus Harris (5) miscued a drive to mid-on, where Naavya Sharma took a diving catch, reducing Lancashire to 74-3. After lunch, Jennings brought up his third half-century in five innings off 107 balls, but Michael Jones fell for 27, bowled by a beautiful delivery from teenager Morgan. Matty Hurst (7) then offered a simple catch to fourth slip off Sharma, making it 128-5.
Green joined Jennings, and although he was dropped on 13, Roland-Jones removed Jennings for 67 with a fine delivery that nicked behind. Tom Hartley followed for three, caught behind off Higgins. Bad light forced an early tea before the tail crumbled: Tom Bailey fell for 11, Mitch Stanley was clean bowled by Roland-Jones for one, and Green was last out, bowled by Morgan (3-41).
Needing quick wickets, Lancashire turned to veteran Anderson, who has 704 Test scalps. The 43-year-old had Robson caught by a juggling Jones for six, then uprooted Holden’s middle stump with a beauty for five. Leus du Plooy countered with a couple of boundaries off Anderson, but after only nine overs, bad light ended play prematurely.
